Francisco António de Faria

(Ribeira Brava, 1879) - (Ribeira Brava, 05/12/1966)

Abstract:
[Ribeira Brava, Madeira 1879 – Ribeira Brava, Madeira 05/12/1966]
Founder and Regent of the Filarmónica União Musical Ribeirabravense and first conductor of the Banda Recreio Musical Ribeirabravense.

Biography:
The regent Francisco António de Faria was natural of Ribeira Brava, where he was born in 1879 and where he died on December 5, 1966, with 87 years of age.
He was son of Constantino de Abreu de Faria and Maria Rita de Macedo and married Elvira da Nazaré Barreto, in Ribeira Brava, on July 25, 1900, with 21 years of age.
Shoemaker by profession, Francisco António de Faria devoted himself to music as a secondary activity, however, was successful as founder and regent of the União Musical Ribeirabravense and first regent of the Banda Recreio Musical Ribeirabravense.
The Diário de Notícias, in its edition of 25 of February of 1912, made reference to “the UNIÃO MUSICAL RIBEIRABRAVENSE is what is called a new philharmonic society that has just been organized in Ribeira Brava, in the management of Sir Francisco António de Faria. The respective statues will be briefly submitted for approval of the Sir Civil Governor”.
In 1904 the regional press also reported the foundation of a new harmony orchestra in Ribeira Brava, with some musicians who integrated Filarmónica União Fraternal Ribeirabravense including Francisco António de Faria.
Francisco Faria, foreman in the Filarmónica União Fraternal Ribeirabravense, took over as regent in the new harmony.
In 1912 Francisco António de Faria appears as founder of another harmony, because of misunderstandings within the group founded in 1904. That’s how it was founded on, February 1912, Filarmónica União Musical Ribeirabravense in opposition to Filarmónica União Fraternal Ribeirabravense.
The Filarmónica União Musical Ribeirabravense was active until the 1950s, contrary to the music initiative of the previous regent, who just kept active between 1904 and 1912.
With 84 years Francisco António de Faria was still the first regent of the Banda Recreio Musical Ribeirabravense founded on March 19, 1963 by the musician António Abreu de Carvalho. The presence of Francisco António de Faria in this group led to the association of the Banda Recreio Musical Ribeirabravense with a continuation of the Filarmónica União Musical Ribeirabravense, extinguished in the 1950s.
