History – Banda Filarmónica de Santo António

The Banda Filarmónica de Santo António was founded on January 6, 2010, by the initiative of Rui Rodrigues, a former performer of the Banda Municipal do Funchal – Artistas Funchalenses and founding member of the Banda Filarmónica do Caniço e Eiras , and in direct partnership with the Parish Council of Santo António, then chaired by Rui Santos. Registered on October 12, 2010, the Banda Filarmónica de Santo António started its activity in a space allocated by this local authority in the Civic Center of Santo António, with instruments acquired by its mentor, having received, on the offer of private entities, new instrument in July 2012. Taking for its initial strength of the musicians of the Banda Municipal do Funchal – Artistas Funchalenses, Banda Distrital do Funchal – Guerrilhas, of the Banda Filarmónica do Caniço e Eiras and instrumentalists trained in classes of wind instruments and percussion of the Orchestra of Wind Instruments of the Direction of Services of Artistic and Multimedia Education, the Banda Filarmónica de Santo António – under the initial artistic direction of Paulo Camacho, former performer Guerrilhas, and by the work of experienced performers – promoted free music training from a young age of children’s communities. young people and adults from this parish. Composed by 35 musicians, including several graduates of the institution, and 15 new apprentices, the Santo António Concert Band offered its musical contribution on a regular basis in religious festivals, popular marches, Carnival parades and private parties, participated in radio and television programs and organized concerts in public spaces of the parish of Santo António and the cities of Funchal (08.04.2012, Avenida Arriaga) and Porto Santo (9-11.10.2015, Largo do Pelourinho), having performed in previous editions of Ribeira Brava’s Rendez-vous des Harmonies. On March 14, 2017, the artistic association obtained a new headquarters – in the rehabilitated building of the old School of Lombo dos Aguiares – in Caminho do Lombo dos Aguiares, number 73. Under the artistic direction of Sergeant-Major João Gomes de Sousa, the Banda Filarmónica de Santo António, currently composed of around 20 performers, is seeking to strengthen its staff, through the acquisition of new instruments and the encouragement of musical training for new apprentices, aimed at consolidate its activity of promoting the occupation of leisure time and diffusion of harmony music.
