Biography:
Son of Artur Marques Mendes and Joaquina da Conceição Ribeiro Ferreira, Joaquim Filipe Ribeiro Mendes was born on November 25, 1982 in the municipality of Guimarães.
By influence of the musicians in his family, he began at the age of 9 his artistic apprenticeship in the Banda Musical de Caldas das Taipas, Guimarães, and as the age of 10 he was admitted in the Music Conservatory Calouste Gulbenkian of Braga, under the supervision of the teacher and composer Alexandre Fonseca. In 2001, Joaquim Mendes concluded the General Course of Musical Formation, entering again this year, and until 2005, in the Escola de Educação de Viana do Castelo for the frequency of the degree in Teachers of Elementary Education, varying Education music. Two years after graduation, in 2007, Joaquim Mendes attended the Orchestra Conduct Course with Master Jean Ignácio Petit.
Joaquim Mendes has worked in several genres of music with teachers Alexandre Fonseca, António Batista, Paulo Silva, Isabel Maya, Helena Vieira, Fátima Morgado, Nabuco Silvestre, Paulo Bastos, Serafim Barreira, Fernando Ribeiro, Zeferino Pinto, Vítor Lima, Eugénia Vigny, among others. He has also participated in several courses, master classes, conferences, musical exchanges, symposia, international festivals and training of artistic modalities. Sporadically, he has joined as guest musician several chamber groups, choirs, harmonies, light orchestras, big bands and orchestras.
Throughout his career he has been a tuba instrumentalist at Banda Musical de Caldas das Taipas, Quinteto de Metais de Braga, Orquestra de Câmara de Braga, Banda Marcial de Arnoso, Banda de Música dos Bombeiros Voluntários da Póvoa de Lanhoso, Banda de Musica Flôr da Mocidade Junqueirense, Banda de Golães-Fafe, Banda Filarmónica de Amares, Musical Banda de Pevidém, Banda Musical de Calvos, Orquestra de Sopros do Gabinete Coordinator of Educação Artística and Banda Musical de Vila Verde.
Given his remarkable experience in the artistic direction of the harmonies, especially his performance as master of the Banda Musical de Aboim da Nóbrega (Vila Verde – Braga) between 2004 and 2008, due to is job as a teacher of Music Education at the Elementary School and College of Machico, Joaquim Mendes accepted the invitation of the social organs and took the artistic direction of the Banda Municipal de Machico.
