Professor of History of Music in the Army, Virgílio Vieira Marques dos Ramos was also regent and head of the Military Band of Madeira, founder and conductor of the Banda Musical da Casa do Povo de Nossa Senhora da Piedade de Porto Santo and the Banda Municipal de Câmara de Lobos.
Biography:
Virgílio Vieira Marques dos Ramos was a native of Monte, Funchal, where he was born on January 25, 1941, and died on December 14, 2006. Son of João Marques Ramos and Maria Vieira dos Ramos. Virgílio dos Ramos married 2 of July of 1962, with Rita Maria de Jesus Ramos, of whom he later divorced. He married again on December 8, 1990, with Maria Isabel Cabral do Couto.
Virgílio Vieira Marques dos Ramos began his musical training in Banda Distrital do Funchal and later continued to develop his musical abilities in the Banda Militar, when integrated the army like volunteer 7 of September of 1959. From that date his career took place is developed especially in the field of music in military harmonies. However, also carried out activities in the civil music like founder and regent of the Banda Musical da Casa do Povo de Nossa Senhora da Piedade do Porto Santo and regent of the Banda Municipal de Câmara de Lobos.
During his musical activity in the Banda Militar da Madeira, Virgilio Ramos was a clarinetist and ascended to the role of sergeant musician and sergeant-assistant, without a precise date; lieutenants, August 10, 1983; Lieutenant, August 10, 1984; Captain, August 10, 1987; and Major Chief of Banda de Música, on October 1, 1995.
Regarding his presentations as regent of harmony, the Diário de Notícias, in the edition of March 30, 1994 mentioned: “the Banda Militar da Madeira makes, e the 17:30 to 18.30 hours, a concert in the bridge of the Regional Assembly Compositions by Mozart, Rossini, Williams, among others, will be performed under the direction of Captain Virgílio Ramos “.
The musician also directed the Banda Militar dos Azores, the Banda do Regimento de Infantaria de Queluz e Carregueira and the Banda do Exército. In addition to the regimental activity of the military harmonies, he was a professor of History of Music in training for the sergeant’s certificate.
