Biography:
Son of João Manuel Ferreira and Maria Isabel Soares Ornelas Abreu, natural from Câmara de Lobos, João Heliodoro Abreu Ferreira was born on 24 June 1979 in Câmara de Lobos.
João Ornelas de Abreu’s grandson, who plays Banda Recreio Campones, João Heliodoro Ferreira is one of several musicians in the family, including his brothers João Emanuel Abreu Ferreira and Luís Alberto Abreu Ferreira, and today also includes his niece Sofia Isabel Araújo Ferreira and his wife Maria Brígida Figueira Andrade Ferreira.
As expected, João Heliodoro Ferreira began in the Banda Recreio Camponês at 11 years of age his musical training in trumpet and solfege with the conductor João Figueira Quintal. After a year, he joined the Conservatory of Music of Madeira (currently Conservatory – School of Arts of Madeira, Eng. Luiz Peter Clode), attended, until the fourth year, the trumpet lessons with professors João Rosa and Peter Vig and violin with Professor Zita Gomes. Still in this institution of artistic education, he concluded the 5th grade in the euphonium class with Professor Aquilino Domingo da Silva, having been a member of the Conservatory Wind Instruments Orchestra, under the direction of this professor. Already in accordance with his service as an instrumentalist of the Banda da Zona Militar da Madeira, and after classes with Professor Reinaldo Guerreiro, João Heliodoro Ferreira concluded the 8th year of the conservatory course in the euphonium class of Professor Fabien Filipe. He attended, as a participant, several masterclasses of tuba / euphonium with tubers Sérgio Carolino, Adélio Carneiro and Fabien Felipe and management formations with conductors José Brito and André Granjo.
Having joined in 2001, as a volunteer, the Banda da Zona Militar da Madeira, João Heliodoro Ferreira joined in 2005 the 34th Curso de Formação of Sargentos – Serviço de Músicos, which he successfully completed in 2007, being established his placement in the Banda da Zona Militar da Madeira, where at the moment he serves as 1st sergeant musician (euphonium) of the Frame Bandas and Fanfarras of the Army.
Having served as artistic director of the Banda Juvenil da Banda Recreio Campones, João Heliodoro Ferreira has been appointed and still serves as deputy chief and teacher of the brass class at the music school of this community. Since September 2014, João Heliodoro Ferreira has been Artistic Director of Banda Paroquial de São Lourenço da Camacha and professor of the trombone, euphonium and tuba class at the music school of this parish art institution. In 2015, he conducted the ABFRAM Wind Instruments Orchestra in the I Seminário de Bandas da ABFRAM.
João Heliodoro Ferreira has held and continues to hold positions in the social organs of the communities of the regional philharmonic movement. He served, in the Banda Recreio Camponês, between 2005 and 2010, as secretary of the direction. Today, he fulfills the mandates as secretary of the General Assembly in the Banda Recreio Camponês and the Associação de Bandas Filarmónicas da Região Autónoma da Madeira (ABFRAM).

Among his compositions stands the marches of the 91st to 97th anniversaries of the Banda Recreio Camponês, Marcha de Homenagem aos Fundadores da Banda Recreio Camponês (98th Anniversary Banda Recreio Camponês), Marcha João Ornelas de Abreu (99th Anniversary Banda Recreio Camponês), Marcha do Centenário da Banda Recreio Camponês, Hino do Centenário da Banda Recreio Camponês, Marcha João Figueira Quintal (101st Anniversary Banda Recreio Camponês), Marcha Germano Pinto Oliveira (102nd Anniversary Banda Recreio Camponês), Marcha Tito Abílio Silva (107th Anniversary Banda Recreio Camponês ) and Marcha José Caires Nóbrega (44th Anniversary Banda Paroquial of São Lourenço da Camacha), and also the Christmas composition Pastores, for the Banda Paroquial of São Lourenço da Camacha.
