Funchal, 15/06/1947 –
Military, regent and musician playing flugelhorn, trumpet and flicker. João Gomes Henriques de Sousa was Acting Chief of the Madeira Military Band and directed the Banda Municipal de Santa Cruz, the Filarmónica dos Artistas Funchalenses, the Banda Municipal Paulense, Banda Recreio Camponês, among others.

Biography: 
João Gomes Henriques Sousa comes from the parish of São Martinho, where he was born on June 15, 1947, son of João de Sousa and Constantina de Jesus.
João Sousa had the first contact with the musical activity at the age of fourteen, as a bugle and trumpet apprentice in the Banda Distrital do Funchal.

At the age of nineteen, João Gomes Henriques Sousa joins the army as a volunteer in the army, forming part of the Madeira Military Band, where he flickers and earns the rank of sergeant chief. During his military career, he was also deputy chief musician for about two years and served as interim head of the Madeira Military Band.
In addition to the activity of military musician, João Gomes Henriques de Sousa has performed in several regional philharmonic orchestras, namely the Banda Municipal de Santa Cruz, the Artistas Funchalenses (now Banda Municipal do Funchal), Banda Municipal Paulense and Banda Receio Campones.
For the aforementioned bands, he was also artistic director at the Banda Municipal de Santana (1972-1973); Filarmónica Recreio Ribeirabravense – also known as Banda Nova da Ribeira Brava – between (1973-1977); Banda Recreio Campones; Banda Distrital do Funchal; Orquestra Ligeira da Madeira (1993-1997); and since 1990 at the Musical Banda da Casa do Povo de Nossa Senhora da Piedade do Porto Santo.
