Biography:
Son of João Quintal and Maria Ángela Tavares Figueira, João Maurício Tavares Quintal was born on October 14, 1960, in the village of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos. In a family of harmonious musicians of the municipality, in which stands out his father, João Figueira Quintal, Maurício Quintal received from his parent his first clarinet classes.
Maurício Quintal joined the Banda Recreio Camponês in 1973, remaining in this community as a performer until 1999, encouraged by his father, because in these years the immigration to Venezuela had deprived several elements of the band so the formation of new musicians became a priority.
Between 1976 and 1983, Maurício Quintal attended and concluded the clarinet class in the Madeira Conservatory of Music. During is musical formation he also studied the violin, piano, oboe and bassoon, with the teachers João Quintal, Zita Gomes, João Luís, Raul Serrão and Sérgio Godinho. Maurício Quintal joined the Banda Militar da Madeira from September 1981 to January 1983. In the 1983 school year, Maurício Quintal began teaching at the Câmara de Lobos Elementary School. Two years after his conclusion of the professionalisation in service by the University of Madeira, in 1991. Maurício Quintal began his pedagogical activity at the Elementary and Secondary School of Ponta do Sol, as a professional training supervisor, having been, between 1992 and 1995, member of the Board of Directors of this school, initially with the function of “Vogal” and after, secretary. Throughout his professional career Maurício Quintal has participated annually in several courses, among them the seminars promoted by Carlos Godinho, Isabel Carneiro and Keith Swanwick.
Maurício Quintal was one of the founders of Orquestra Ligeira da Madeira, founded in 1996, with whom he collaborated until 1998.
Having witnessed and completed in 1990 and 1992 the races of harmony regents, João Maurício Quintal corroborated, since 1997, his competence for the regency and the teaching of young musicians, as artistic director / conductor of the Banda Filarmónica da Casa do Povo de São Vicente.
