José António Dellanave was artistic director of the Banda Filarmónica Recreio União Faialense and professor in Funchal during the 2nd half of the 19th century.
Biography:
The first recording on the personal life of the musician in Funchal comes in 1863, when he married with Augusta da Conceição, to S. Pedro. And then to 1867, in the recording of the baptism of his son, Alfredo Dellanave, according to the Arquivo Regional da Madeira.
The newspaper A Flor do Oceano published in 1866 a reference to José António Dellanave as professor, property and director of a college at rue da Carreira, 122. The musician was “activated with respective examination of primary instruction, which he did before the Sir Commissioner of Lisbon Studies and authorized by the diploma that the summer conferred the ministry “and he received” internal and external students secure the advertiser to relatives of the family all the zeal by the education of his students”.
While a teacher he also taught music in the Filarmónica Recreio União Faialense as master of music. The master of music was artistic director of the Faial harmony and one of the principal conductors of this community, with Joaquim Francisco de Freitas, João Xavier de Freitas, Júlio Teixeira Marques Barcelos and João Albino Rodrigues Sousa.
In 1897, on February 21, Joaquim Francisco de Freitas celebrated “at Jacinto da Silva Meneses, a apprenticeship contract valid for one year with master sergeant Della Nave”, with the objective of providing training to the musicians of Banda Filarmónica Recreio União Faialense.
About the work developed in this community the Diário de Notícias reported on July 18, 1897 a performance with regency of António Dellanave, during a religious festival to S. Roque of the Faial.
