Musicien militaire, professeur du conservatoire de Madeira et directeur artistique des harmonies. José António Nunes de Faria était directeur artistique des Banda Municipal de Câmara de Lobos et Banda Municipal da Ribeira Brava; musicien de la Banda Militar da Madeira et fondateur de la Banda Orquestral de Câmara de Lobos, Os Infantes.

Biography:
José António Nunes de Faria was a native of Câmara de Lobos, where was born on December 1, 1954, died in Ribeira Brava on March 20, 2008. Son of Martinho Nunes Gomes Faria and Beatriz Natividade Martins de Barros.
His first contact with the music was due to his participation in a choir of the parish of São Sebastião, Câmara de Lobos, directed by the master Dominguinhos. With eleven years he learned the first basics of solfeggio, knowledge that deepened when he joined the Banda Municipal de Câmara de Lobos with fourteen years as apprentice clarinet in E flat.
In 1973, José António Nunes de Faria joined the army as a volunteer, to be placed in the Banda Militar da Madeira. The following year enrolled at the Conservatory – Madeira School of the Arts in violin and two years later in clarinet, formation he concluded in 1980.
José António Nunes de Faria also participated in several training courses: course of the I.N.A.T.E.E.L. for regents of harmonies; an international clarinet course; and music composer course for harmony orchestras.
In 1977, with 23 years of age it passed to artistic director of the Banda Municipal de Câmara de Lobos, role that played until 1986. In that year founded with some musicians the Banda Orquestral de Câmara de Lobos, Os Infantes .
The Banda Municipal de Câmara de Lobos is the oldest known musical group in the municipality, with foundation on November 18, 1872 by João de Nóbrega Noronha under the name of Filarmónica Recreio dos Lavradores raised to the category of municipal harmony on March 21, 1930. Following disagreements among its members, this musical group gave birth to the Banda Recreio Camponês, founded on December 1, 1910 by José Gonçalves and the Banda Orquestral de Câmara de Lobos Os Infantes, founded on July 27, 1986 by José António Faria. Both groups continue today.
José António Nunes de Faria remained in the direction of the Banda Orquestral de Câmara de Lobos Os Infantes until 1991, year in which he took the artistic direction of the Banda Municipal da Ribeira Brava. In 1998 took the artistic direction of Banda Municipal do Funchal, role that maintained until its death, to 2008.
In addition to the musical direction, José António Nunes de Faria was also a professor at the Conservatory – School of Arts of Madeira and produced a significant number of compositions and musical arrangements, where stand out birthday walks created for the harmonies where he took functions, as performing musician and artistic director.
